THIRTIES PICNIC AT POLESDEN LACEY |
Polesden Lacey is a beautiful National Trust regency country house on the North Downs between Leatherhead and Guildford. It was formerly the home of the Hon. Mrs. Ronald Greville a famous society hostess who counted the aristocracy and King Edward VII amongst her house guests. In 1923 the Queen Mother, then Duchess of York, spent part of her honeymoon here. |
As a current attraction to draw the public to view the house and grounds, Polesden Lacey organised a Pageant which re-created a 1935 summer garden party using the services of the local amateur dramatic society in full costume to create Queen Mary, Baron von Rippentrop, Professor Lindemann and other notables, as well as all the staff for the house. Dignitaries were driven through the grounds along the impressive tree lined drive to the big house where the waiting footmen opened the car doors and the butler introduced the guests to Mrs Greville. Two performances were provided during the day. |
